The Bhajan Meghwal tradition

Among The Bhajan (praises) sang by the Meghwal many of them worship the holy man Baba Ramdev lived who in India between the late 14th and early 16th centuries. He was worshipped as a god in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Baba Ramdev’s approach, with its mystical discourse and everyday spirituality, rather than the elaboration of a precise path or a particular dogma, enables disadvantaged castes within the Brahman hierarchy to emancipate themselves and attain religious dignity, conferring on them an egalitarian status. This approach was part of a great spiritual movement that, between the 13th and 14th centuries, saw the emergence of a new syncretic approach between Hinduism and Sufism. Indeed, certain low-caste Panth sects were drinking in the new Ismaili doctrines, which were spreading through the proselytizing (dawa) of numerous wandering missionaries (dai). These nomadic monks, who criss-crossed northern India, joined various Sufi branches, creating new mystical currents such as the Nizar Panth or Nizari Dharm.
