
Sattriya dance is a classical dance form from Assam, created by the great saint Sankaradev in the 15th -16th century as part of the neo-vaishnavite movement. This form carries the legacy and living tradition until today and is performed in the Sattra precinct as a ritual service to appease the almighty, and also being performed on stage to appease the audience.
The Sattriya ritual has been performed by monks in Assam for the past 600 years as a ritual of worship before the Srimad Bhagavad Gita at the heart of Sattra is the namaghar where music, dance and dance-drama performances take place. Sattriya was given recognition as the 8th classical dance form, other’s being Mohini Attam, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, and Kathakali.
